Summer on a Budget
Now, I know Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20, but with the warm weather rolling in its pretty clear people are taking advantage of the warm weather and are getting the most out of summer.
I have already seen numerous people gardening, throwing a Frisbee in the park and even sitting by the water enjoying an Ice cream cone or cold drink. Not to mention the amount of people who are already wearing shorts and sandals on a regular basis.
With summer un-officially already started, have you made plans with your friends, family or significant other on how to get the most out of the season?
Wouldn’t it be nice, if we all could take a cruise or go on a vacation this summer? Seems like everyone I know on Facebook and Instagram are already doing and seeing more than I could ever imagine. We all can’t afford to go on a vacation every year, or to take time off from our jobs to travel. But there are ways to enjoy your summer that are cost effective and don’t need a travel agent to plan.
I have compiled a list of ways to get the most out of your summer, while not spending a lot of money.
1)Go to the Drive-Inn*
Grab your significant other, friends and or family, pile in the car and head to the drive in for the night. There is just something about being able to watch a movie on a billboard sized screen that is amazing. The prices are very similar to going to a traditional movie theatre; adults are $13, kids 5-12 are $5, and kids 4 years or younger are FREE. They even have specials on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at times during the summer they have 4 Movie All-Nighters that are only $15. This is one thing, I am certainly going to be doing this year; I just hope I can stay awake for all 4 movies.
*Just remember the Mustang doesn’t take debit or credit and there are no ATM’s on site.

2) Go to the Beach
Whether it is a day trip or your are staying away for the weekend, the beach is a great and inexpensive place to visit during the summer. Watch out for weekends and even long weekends because it seems like everyone tends to gravitate to the beach during those times. If you’re looking for a day at the beach when it isn’t packed, try going on a Tuesday or Wednesday. These are the least populated days for beaches.
3) Take a Hike
Take a look on-line for a hiking trail near you, grab a friend or family member, protein bars and water and just go. There are so many beautiful hiking trails in and around the Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge and Milton areas to discover. A lot of times people miss out on the beautiful views, foliage and fresh air because they aren’t sure where to go, or may just be too lazy to get outside and hike. If you find hiking too hard, that is fine, maybe find a local park and take a stroll. You never know, you may find a spot you can call your own.
4) Dine at a new restaurant
There are so many local establishments in your city, and I know there has to be some you have never tried. So, why not make an evening out of it? Gather some friends, get dressed up and enjoy a great dinner at a new restaurant. It’s fun getting dressed up and it makes you feel good about yourself. Worst case scenario; you never eat there again. Best case scenario; you have a new favourite spot to eat!
5) Enjoy your surroundings
Not everything you do has to involve something. ie. getting dressed up, driving to a location, going to the movies…. Sometimes the best things in life are free. Take a walking tour around the city and see what it has to offer. Try and find local swap meets, or farmers markets or whatever you have interest in. Just getting out of the house and doing something, is way better than sitting inside slowly melting into the couch.
6) Just Have Fun
Not everyone will have the time or resources to do all the things mentioned above, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your summer. We just spent months inside due to the cold weather and bone chilling wind in winter, get outside and do something. Or better, get outside and do nothing. Grab a couple drinks and snacks and relax outside. Let your skin soak up the sun and get that Vitamin D from the sun rays into your body.
These are just a few ideas on how to get the most out of summer, but there are hundreds and even thousands of others I haven’t mentioned.
